Why Learn To Skate?

The Kids Learning DipsLearning to skate is a stimulating and enjoyable challenge. It is a great activity for developing co-ordination, self confidence and fitness. Many people tell us this is the first sporting activity that they have been able to stick at! Our Learn To Skate course focuses on correct skating techniques starting from basic moves and progresses up to more demanding elements such as jumps and spins.

Who can learn?
Anybody can learn to skate, from 4 year olds to adults. A special parent/child course caters for younger children (2-6 years) and a parent. Progress is at your own speed and is taught by experienced coaches who have a special understanding of beginners needs.

Any special skills required before taking lessons?
No special abilities are needed to join classes however you must be able to let go of the barrier and move across the ice freely. If you have not yet reached that stage but would like to join a class please ask us to make a quick assessment of your ability to join classes.

Do we compete?
At the end of each term there is an optional competition which gives skaters a chance to show what they have learnt. This is the highlight of each term and is greatly enjoyed by younger skaters and their parents. The competition lasts about 90 minutes and is followed by medal presentations.

What if I miss a lesson?
It is your responsibility to be present during your allocated lesson time. If you miss a lesson due to non attendance Cockburn Ice Arena cannot provide you with a make up lesson or credit you in any other way.

It involves participating in a second, more intensive lesson each week, as well as continuing with your Learn to Skate classes. Coaches will nominate potential future figure and synchro skaters at the end of each skating term. Generally invitations are offered to children between the ages of 4 and 12. You can apply to Calandra for this program if your child has not been invited, and your child will be assessed for suitability to the program.

Squad Program (Ages 4-7)

Twice a year we run intakes for our squad program. The last intake was in April and the next intake will be around November. The aim of this squad is to give children the best possible chance to reach a national and international level of skating by identifying talent at a young age. Anyone between the ages of 4 and 7 is eligible to apply for squad tryouts at one of the twice yearly intakes, or can apply to be assessed individually. If you would like to apply please contact Calandra at the rink or on 9434 4066.
